M.A Lewis Mourning Ring, 1852
An ideal piece for the middle of the 19th Century; this ring encapsulates all of the design motifs popular with the time (shield motif, serpent, black enamel, post-Gothic Revival lettering).
Two snakes coil around the shank and underneath is the hair memento with the inscription surrounding it. Hidden hair mementos became more popular from this time, compartments and hidden areas in a ring could hold a loved one’s hair without compromising the design or function of the piece.
