Lecture 1: Profit and Loss – Demand for Mourning Jewels and Fashion in History

Values of 17th-19th century mourning custom and fashion were important to represent social, religious and political views. The cost of fashionable mourning was almost as high as the loss of a loved one and the requirements of mourning costume and jewels led families into debt. Learn about how these customs became part of family behaviour and how businesses profited from loss.
Using primary resources of mourning jewels, this lecture will focus on the evolution of jewelry design from the 17th century onwards, offering insights into the lifestyles of the people who wore mourning jewels and those who made them.

Lecture 2: Grief Over Time

Change in modern grief theory has had a negative impact on western culture. Reviewing 19th and early 20th century mourning customs and ephemera show just how expressions of grief could lead modern individuals to a healthier way of approaching the loss of a loved one.

This lecture will look at mourning-related ephemera, the different kinds of memorial photography, mourning clothing, its usage, and how it changes between the first quarter of the 19th century through the end of WWII as expressions of mourning and grief move more towards the modern model.
