Late 19th Century Jet Earrings

Jet Earrings

Catalogues of the 19th century are one of the most invaluable ways of finding out about the date of a piece of jewellery and also as to its value of the time.

The pair of earrings displayed can be found in catalogues from 1892, but due to their style, would have several years of production before and after this date. Jet was a popular material in fashion, not just part of mourning, so a simple set of earrings would accompany a fashionable lady of the time.

This particular pair retailed for a generous $6 US, which is not only telling of their importance in fashion, but also how desirable Jet was.
